ABOUT SAYANTAN SARKAR

After working as a senior merchandiser in a knit wear export firm, SayantanSarkar, a design graduate from NIFT Kolkata, established the company “Cyan Creations,” in the year 2003 as a start-up dealing with Kids wear in knits only. A production house primarily focussed on the middle-east export market for kids knitted t-shirts. In 2006 the company launched its first domestic production and created an in-house workshop of more than sixty skilled workers and a production capacity of about ten thousand pieces a month. In 2007 the couture label “SayantanSarkar” was launched as a women’s wear label working primarily with the traditional crafts and weaves of India. His passion for Bengal craft forms found him drawn to the remotest of villages in Bengal. From quirky batik prints to self-developed Jamdani weaves, and from unusual block prints to the hand-woven “gamcha(local towel)” technique – Sayantan has been working with almost-lost craft forms to create the distinctive SayantanSarkar label, that caters to prêt as well as couture lines for men and women and beautifully blend contemporary silhouettes with traditional Indian surface ornamentation and textiles.

The success of this effort to bring the rural craft forms on a national platform reached its peak when the label showcased consecutively for five seasons at the Lakme Fashion Week, one of the most prestigious platforms for all designers nationally. Leading Indian actress, Paoli Dam walked the red carpet in a SayantanSarkar red and white DhakaiJamdanisaree at the 64th Cannes Film Festival that earned her major style points from the international press as well. Indian actors ZeenatAman, MahimaChaudhury, VarunDhawan, ChunkeyPandey, AmitSadh, VidyaBalan; national award winner AnanyaChatterjee; singers UshaUthup, Babul Supriyo, Aditya Narayan; supermodelNayonikaChatterjee and Miss India World-turned actor SayaliBhagat number among the celebrities who have graced his designs.

Having reached its audience nationally now the firm is aiming to expand on an international market and set up its own niche export division, which was started before the company’s first participation in an Indo-Italian trade meet in Milan, San Marino and Rome in Italy organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Indian Embassy in Italy.
